This topic is so gut wrenching. Land mines are so awful and they cost so so much more to dismantle than they do to make. There is a lot of international work on dismantling land mines, a lot of countries have signed The Convention on the Prohibition of the Use, Stockpiling, Production and Transfer of Anti-Personnel Mines and on their Destruction, which is super important but, sadly, the US is not a signatory of it. It is my understanding that we have not signed the treaty because of our involvement in the Koreas and our investments along the demilitarized zone there, but still I wish there was more we could do.
