The Sinai Interim Agreement

Egypt and Israel signed the Sinai Interim Agreement, or Sinai II, in Geneva, Switzerland, on September 4, 1975. This agreement stated that “The conflict between them and in the Middle East shall not be resolved by military force but by peaceful means.”

During the Ford administration Secretary of State Henry Kissinger continued his shuttle diplomacy in the Middle East, which helped lead to this disengagement agreement. Sinai II represented a significant step towards reaching a final peace settlement by negotiation as called for by United Nations Resolution 338. It also strengthened diplomatic relations between the Israel, Egypt, and the United States.

For more about Henry Kissinger’s shuttle diplomacy, see the digitized Middle East Memcons and Reports from the Kissinger Reports on USSR, China, and Middle East Discussions.
