Scenes from Sid, Serbia: earlier this week I walked through the cornfields from Serbia to the Croatian border with a bunch of families – Waseem, an economist, and Maysa, a vet, and their eight-month-old son Murad who come from now-devastated Deir az-Zour; Judy, a 12 year-old-girl whose school in Damascus was hit by barrel bombs; Bushra, a teacher from Aleppo, who has lost everything and wanted to get her three children to Germany. All of them said they were doing this to get their children to safety, that enduring this journey was better than what they had been enduring at home. What a choice.
