The United States plans to increase the number of refugees admitted from Central America fleeing El Salvador, Honduras, and Guatemala — the three “Northern Triangle” countries that are currently embroiled in increasing gang violence and extreme poverty — U.S. Secretary of State John Kerryannounced on Wednesday.

On this day, we remember the assassination of Ambassador John Gordon Mein, who was assassinated in Guatemala on August 28, 1968.

Ambassador Mein had been serving in the midst of the Guatemalan Civil War when he was captured by members of the guerrilla organization Fuerzas Armadas Rebeldes (FAR), who forced him out of his limousine. It is believed that the FAR members only wanted to take him hostage, but when Ambassador Mein tried to run to safety he was shot eight times and killed.
