On this day in 1957, the infamous Senator Joseph McCarthy passed away at the age of 48.

Senator McCarthy is remembered for his “with us or against us” beliefs when it came to fighting communism in the United States. The era of McCarthyism began when he delivered a speech stating that he “had a list of communists” working in the State Department.

You can learn more about the effect that McCarthy had on the State Department during the Cold War at the link.

In the State Department, the Office of the Inspector General (OIG) is tasked with ensuring that the Department is functioning efficiently and maintaining its integrity at each post.

In practice, the OIG works to root out crime and abuse conducted by LSEs, or people from the host country that work at each posting, and FSOs.

You can read on at the link to learn more about the OIG and the work they do.

On this day in 1953, infamous Senator Joseph McCarthy claimed there were Communists working in the U.S. Department of State. His influence, known as “McCarthyism,” ended up persecuting many FSOs and driving diplomats out of the Foreign Service.

You can read on at the link to learn more about how McCarthyism affected the Foreign Service Institute, where FSOs are trained, or check out the McCarthyism tag on ADST.org to learn more about how McCarthyism affected the State Department as a whole.

Before the Foreign Service Act, many senior Foreign Service Officers didn’t actually have a post. They just waited at Main State for something for them to show up.

The Foreign Service Act instituted an up or out system along with many other changes. However, when an institution like the State Department changes so quickly, it’s bound to rustle a few feathers.

Read on at the link to learn more about how the State Department changed the way it operated in the early 1980s.

“Few things will disrupt our lives, and negatively affect our economy as profoundly as #ClimateChange”

Religious communities are at the forefront of the global effort to mitigate global climate change and engage in efforts to adapt to its consequences.

Earlier this year, Pope Francis’ statement to the world’s Roman Catholics – “Laudato si’: On Care for Our Common Home” – received great attention. “All of us can cooperate as instruments of God for the care of creation,” it said.

On November 9-10, the U.S. Department of State - Office of Religion and Global Affairs and Georgetown University’s Berkley Center will co-host a symposium to bring together faith leaders to address the intersection of faith, science, and policy. As we move closer to the global climate change negotiations in Paris (‪#‎COP21‬) later this year, faith communities will be among the among the critical players in the pursuit of a successful United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
