Today in Panama is Martyr’s Day, which commemorates the riots on January 9, 1964. The violence started after the Panamanian flag was torn during a conflict with the Panamanian students and the Canal Zone police over the right of the Panamanian flag to be flown alongside the U.S. flag.
Sovereignty wouldn’t be returned to the Panamanians for 13 years. However, you can read about the process to return the Canal to Panama at the link.
