
On this day in 1978, the Crown of St. Stephen was returned to Hungary. For decades, the crown had been kept in Fort Knox. Hungary had given the crown and other priceless artifacts to the United States for safekeeping at the end of WWII in order to keep them out of the hands of the Soviet Union.
In 1978, the President Jimmy Carter made the then-controversial decision to return the crown to Hungary.
