The Soviet Invasion of Afghanistan — December 1979 | Association for Diplomatic Studies and Training

On this day in 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, assuming military control over Kabul.
This military invasion and subsequent fighting would plant the seeds for the Taliban in Afghanistan, eventually paving the way for the U.S. invasion over 20 years later.
