
On December 14, 1986, Marine Security Guard Clayton Lonetree went to his superiors and admitted that he had been spying for the KGB. Lonetree had been “turned” by a Russian woman he had met at the Marine Corps Ball a year prior.
When the investigation into Lonetree’s espionage began, it quickly became apparent that the entire U.S. Embassy in Moscow was essentially a radio transmitting information directly to the Soviets. It was so bad that diplomats began resorting to “magic slate” toys to talk to each other.
