On this day in 1984, a Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India leaked 30,000 tons of dangerous chemicals. One of the chemicals leaked was the highly toxic gas methyl isocyanate.
As densely packed shanty towns and slums surrounded the plant, over a half million people were exposed. The State Department estimates that 3,787 people were killed in the immediate effects of the gas leak, with the death toll estimates at 15,000 in the weeks after due to exposure.
