
In a country where music was banned for years under Taliban rule, where women were not allowed an education before, Negin Khpolwak became Afghanistan’s first woman conductor at 17 years old. Khpolwak was sent by her father to study in Kabul and despite pressures from other family members, she persevered and defied tradition.
“I was so happy. I cried when I got on the stage and saw all the people in the audience,” she said.
